Different Brow Treatments explained

At Beauty Vibes we have a variety of on-trend brow treatments to transform even the thinnest, patchiest of brows into beautifully defined eyebrows that really can transform your face entirely.

No matter your brow shape or budget we have the brow treatments solution for you so whether you’re looking for a quick fix or a long term solution understanding exactly what the different brow treatments available to you entails and the benefits gained by these different brow procedures will help you to decide what the best brow solution for you will be to help you to achieve your best brow shape ever.

From the outset, a good eyebrow shape will have a wider body part and a tail-end tapering to a pointed end with a connected brow line top and bottom without any gaps in between. This basic brow rule is the standard guideline we follow to help you achieve your desired eyebrow shape.

Precision eyebrow shaping and tinting

Eyebrow Thread & Tint – Basic Brow Shaping

Eyebrows are perfectly shaped and defined using threading technique (or waxing if you prefer) followed by tinting.  A suitable colour tint to match the undertone of the natural hair is applied.  Tinting gives the illusion of fuller looking brows and enhances the overall brow shape evening out the brows covering any greys and gaps in the brows.  The tint stays on the brow hairs for up to 4 weeks. *Treatment time is approximately 15-20mins.  Regular maintenance appointments will be required every 3wks

Henna Brows

Henna is a longer-lasting alternative to tinting and generally is used to create ombre powdered brow effects.  Because it’s so highly pigmented Henna stains the skin for up to 2 weeks making it the perfect choice to use for very sparse and gappy brows to achieve fuller-looking beautifully, defined eyebrows.

Before application perfect eyebrow symmetry is achieved via precision eyebrow mapping and shaping.  Once henna is applied it is left to dry on the skin for up to 20-25 minutes to allow the Henna pigment to effectively stain the skin and colour the brow hairs.  Results of Henna last up to 6 weeks on brow hairs.  *A 48hr Henna patch test is required prior treatment. *Treatment time is approx. 30-40mins.  Henna Brow maintenance will be required every 3 weeks for sparse and gappy brows  and 4-6 weeks for fuller natural brows

Brushed up laminated brow effects

Brow Lamination with Tint– alternatively known as Brow Sculpt

If your desire is to have big brows but nature gave you naturally thin eyebrows then Brow Lamination with Tint is the perfect solution for you as this particular brow treatment allows you to achieve fuller brows with results lasting 6-8 weeks.  The procedure allows brow hairs to be brushed up thus achieving wider more volumised looking eyebrows.

Brow Lamination is also a great choice of brow treatment to have for those with unruly, bristly curly hairs as the lamination procedure tames disruptive brow hairs allowing them to be groomed into perfect placement for up to 6 weeks.  *Treatment time is approx. 45mins -1hr depending on brow hair texture. Maintenance will be required every 6-8 weeks

*Nouveau Lash Brow Conditioning Serum is recommended to use twice daily following this treatment to nourish and maintain healthy hydrated brow hairs between treatments

Natural hairstroke brow effects

Microblading- semi-permanent brow hair strokes and optional shading effects

The single best solution to achieve transformational symmetrical beautifully defined eyebrows. Results last 12-18 months. Before microbladed semi-permanent hair strokes are drawn in eyebrows are numbed and perfect eyebrow symmetry is achieved via precision eyebrow mapping and shaping.  *24hr mandatory patch test and consultation is required pre-treatment

*Treatment time is approx. 2 hours.  A touch up will be required 8 weeks after treatment followed by annual touch up if required

Ombre brows give soft powder effect to create more definition to the brows

Unlike microblading, which focuses on individual hair strokes, powder brows use a shading technique that gradually fades from dark to light, creating a more defined yet delicate look. This semi-permanent treatment is ideal for those who love the appearance of filled-in brows with a makeup-like finish. Powder brows offer a subtle gradient effect that can last for up to two years, making it a popular choice for those who prefer a polished yet natural appearance.

What are the best Dermalogica products to achieve optimal skin health?

For optimal skin health two fundamental factors are key;

1)  A daily regimen that involves cleansing, exfoliating and moisturising

2) Using suitable products for your skin type.

*In addition balancing a healthy lifestyle will visibly improve your skin’s quality and tone.

Taking Dermalogicas vast range of products into consideration the below cleansing regimes are a simplified approach towards achieving optimal skin health.  The selected regime according to skin type should be done twice daily, (morning and evening) the morning regime include protecting spf formulas whilst evening time formulas work to heal and repair and hydrate skin.

From the outset Drier skin types benefit by using richer formulations enriched with antioxidants. In this way dry, dehydrated skin feels adequately nourished and hydrated without adding excess oils to the skin. The multivitamin and antioxidants in a richer formulation may be more suitable for nighttime, but can also be used daily with the added protection of a broad-spectrum sunscreen. It’s important to choose a noncomedogenic formulation since the texture is richer in this case. *Dermalogica products are non-comedogenic, free of artificial fragrances and colours, paraben-free, vegan, gluten-free and cruelty-free!

Whilst for Oily skin types – the key ingredients to look for in your products will include exfoliating agents eg, Salicylic Acid + Vitamin A.  Clay masks and Sulphur help to absorb excess oils whilst Tea Tree provide antibacterial benefits.  Niacinamide improves skin texture and water-based products are essential for oily skin types to help hydrate and rebalance skin.

Top 5 tips on How To achieve better DIY Eyebrow Shaping at home

Overgrown Eyebrow

In the current climate of uncertainty and salon lockdown, it’s now perhaps a case of “desperate times calls for desperate measures” and in particular when it comes to maintaining some sort of a beauty routine at home.

The guidelines set out below will hopefully pre-empt and prevent any at home ‘DIY ‘brow shaping disasters.

Something to consider before attempting your DIY brow shape is to know from the start that.. *When it comes to hair removal two fundamental factors are key;

  1. Great stretch on the skin for the area you are working on and,
  2. Great technique

With this in mind here are my;

Top 5 tips on – How To achieve better DIY Eyebrow Shaping results at home;

Ideal Eyebrow Shape outline

Tip 1 – Assess the overall eyebrow shape

Look at the shape of your eyebrows and imagine their ideal brow shape outline and draw with a pencil the outline of your eyebrows as indicated in the pic i.e wide body shape and tapered tail end

*A good eyebrow should have a wider body shape from inner nose area to arch point and a tail-end tapering to a point. The overall outline shape of the brow should look like a consistent line top and bottom without any gaps.

Brow Shape prep outline

Tip 2 – Know what hairs should be removed

The hair growth outside the brow line area (as indicated in the pic) is considered brow hair overgrowth and does not contribute to the overall eyebrow shape. *This is the brow hair that can be removed via threading, waxing or tweezering methods for a better and improved overall eyebrow shape  (*See Method procedures below)

Tip 3 – Before attempting to remove hair, Stretch the skin!

Stretching the skin on the area you are working prevents against any unnecessary nicks or bruising of the skin and ensures hair is pulled out from the root.

Tip 4 – Always work against the growth of the hair

Combined with Tip 3 (stretch the skin) this technique ensures effective hair removal from the root, first time!

Tip 5 – Do Not overwork the delicate eye skin area

All hair removal is a form of skin exfoliation by adhering to methods specified in both Tip 3 & Tip 4 will avoid over traumatising the delicate skin area.

Finished Eyebrow Shape

Finishing Tips

Brush brow hairs up and using a brow scissors trim hairs extending over the top brow line

Always follow any hair removal process with a soothing application of moisturiser preferably containing SPF to protect the area against harmful UV damage

Hair Removal Method via Tweezer

  • Hold the tweezer in your dominant hand and use the other hand to stretch the skin.
  • Always focus on removing hair growth outside the natural eyebrow brow line area only *(Refer to Tip 1 above)
  • Tweezer against the hair growth to effectively tweezer out hairs.

*If done correctly the hair tweezered out should reveal the hair bulb.  This means the hair has successfully been plucked from the root.

*If done incorrectly the hair will snap and break and the overall tweezering effect will reveal what looks like black dots in the area.  If this happens do not overwork the skin but do leave the hair to grow longer before attempting removal again

  • Trim any long brows hairs extending over the top brow hairline and finish the treatment with an SPF application to further protect the skin against harmful UV damage

Hair Removal Method via Facial Wax Strips

  • Use a scissors to cut the wax strips into smaller more manageable brow strips
  • Apply talc powder to protect the delicate skin area
  • Apply the small wax strip focusing on the hair growth outside the natural eyebrow brow line area only (Refer to Tip 1 above) *Work in small sections
  • Working against the hair growth, stretch the skin and whip off the wax strip in one swift action
  • Do not work over the same area twice!! *The skin in this area is very delicate any remaining hairs can be tweezered out
  • Using a brow scissors trim any long brows hairs extending over the top brow hairline
  • Finish with the oil-based moisturising pads provided in the pack this also effectively removes any remaining wax residue. *Follow with a protective layer of SPF

Physical or Chemical SPF – Which sunscreen is better??

In short, it comes down to preference! Both provide protection against UV Rays however it is worth knowing how they each work in different ways.

What’s the difference between a Physical Sunscreen and a Chemical Sunscreen?

Physical sunscreens reflect UV light and heat away from the body.  The formula usually contains more organic natural ingredients such as Zinc and Titanium Dioxide.  They can leave a chalk like texture on the skin and usually have to be applied more frequently.  They are a good choice for more sensitive skin types or recently resurfaced skin or those in general sensitive to light and heat with a skin type that is prone to redness, irritation or with a skin condition such as Rosacea, Eczema or Dermatitis.

Chemical sunscreens absorb UV light converting it into less harmful heat energy.  Chemical formulas include ingredients such as oxybenzone and octinoxate and because they are readily absorbed into the skin, unlike the physical sunscreen they leave no chalk-like residue on the skin and also require less frequent application.  Professional SPF products such as Dermalogicas chemical SPF formulations are formulated using what is known as, ‘UV smart booster/oleosome technology’, a process that allowed for SPF protection to increase to 50 without the need to use more chemicals thus, eliminating the irritation that can be found in some sunscreen formulas with a high Sun Protection Factor’s (SPF).

What is UV Smart Booster Oleosome Technology?

Oleosome Technology acts as a time release hence the term UV smart. The process involves microencapsulating a stabilised/active form of vitamins C & E for added booster protection.  Plant-derived oleosomes are loaded with the active sunscreen substance. The capsule remains inactive until UV light hits and only then it will burst into action to release antioxidants thus maximising solar defence against harmful UVA and UVB rays.  And another bonus to this technology is that fewer chemicals are required to achieve a high SPF50 so, in a nutshell, Oleosome Technolgy can provide antixoidant high factor protection without irritation to the skin.

Sun Exposure explained

Any time spent in daylight counts as time that skin is exposed to UV radiation.

Sunlight is comprised of varying wavelengths of electromagnetic radiation, often referred to as the electromagnetic spectrum.

35% of this spectrum is visible light

60% is infrared (felt as heat)

5% is made up of ultraviolet (UV) rays

UVB (Burn Ray) – high energy / short wave – 290-320nm – penetrates the epidermis only

UVA (Ageing Ray) – slow energy / long wave – 320-400nm – penetrates 40 times deeper into skin!!

SPF numbers –what do they actually mean?

In a nutshell;

SPF 15 blocks out 94% of UVB

SPF 30 blocks out 97% of UVB

SPF 50 blocks out 98% of UVB

Any sunscreens that have a higher SPF number provide only marginal incremental levels of protection and usually require more chemicals in their sunscreen formulations.

SPF Numbers – how do they actually work?

The SPF number indicates how long it would take for UVB rays to cause a sunburn so, if for example, your skin would turn red in the sun after 15mins without Sun Protection this means that by applying, for example, an SPF15  this allows you to stay 10 times longer in the sun without the risk of burning (i.e. 150 mins in the sun before the need to apply more).

*No sunscreen provides 100% sunblock protection which means there is no such thing as a safe tan however on a positive note it also means that sunscreen protection will not inhibit the body to produce Vitamin D which is a common myth with sunscreen! So in other words “protected sun exposure provides all the Vitamin D an average person needs”(Quote – Dermalogica).

What is the best way to protect skin from harmful UV rays?

The best way to protect skin against solar damage and probably the most antiageing product that can be applied to the skin is a ‘broad spectrum UVA/UVB sunscreen!!  Applying a daily dollop of broad spectrum UVA/UVB not only protects the DNA of skin cell but also protects the hydration levels of the skins barrier lipid layer otherwise known as the skins natural moisturising factor (NMF) against trans epidermal water loss. (TEWL)

UVB SPF (Sun Protection Factor) protects against the burn ray only and therefore should not be the only protection factor to be considered when choosing a sunscreen

UVA (Ultra Violet Ageing) ray makes up 95% of UV rays and penetrates 40 times deeper into the skin-damaging the dermal layer of the skin.  The damage caused to the dermal layer from unprotected UV exposure contributes to collagen breakdown and loss of elasticity whilst the surface epidermis layer will reveal signs of photoaging in the form of dry, dehydrated, fine lines, pigmentation – brown mottled discoloured spots on the skin and uneven skin tone which contribute to premature ageing.

*Both UVA and UVB rays generate free radicals and can cause skin cancer, so wearing an SPF that shields against both is crucial and this is in general what is meant by the term – Broad Spectrum.

Are all sunscreens the same??

Not all sunscreens are made equal! Whilst it is important to consider both UVB and UVA filter protection in the form of either a physical or chemical broad spectrum sunscreen there is yet another important factor to be considered which is the Infrared Ray (IR)

IR affects the immune system via oxidative stress.  Infrared ray with its ability to penetrate the epidermis and deep into the dermis layer of the skin generates Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS – also commonly known as ‘Free Radicals’).  Free Radicals increase dramatically during times of environmental stress.  This is known as ‘oxidative stress’ and has a very damaging effect on skin cell structure leading to inflammation, cross-linking of collagen (i.e. breakdown of collagen) and degenerative disorders, including skin ageing and disease.

Protective, preventative measures against the detrimental effects of infrared radiation (IR) is achieved via the use of antioxidants via both supplementation and also applying topically to the skin a product formula that is rich in antioxidants.

Fortunately, sunscreens have come a long way from their older greasy layer formulations that predominantly protected against UVB rays only!!

Todays professional formulas not only provide broad spectrum UVB/UVA protection but also have taken an advanced leap to provide protective SPFs that can, as well as addressing the structural manifestations of photoaged skin, such as wrinkles and loss of elasticity they can and already have adapted to a much more advanced scientific approach that addresses the biochemical reactions that actually trigger the assaulting structural changes to the skin.  Eg. Dermalogicas ‘Age Smart’ range of products are formulated using this more advanced scientific approach.

In general, Dermalogicas professional various single formulation sun care products take into consideration sun protection that in addition actively treat skin issues ranging from sensitive to oily skin types and ageing skin concerns.

Advanced technology processes, such as Oleosome Technology provide stabilized microencapsulated vitamin enriched formulas that provide antioxidant protection against IR and UV pollution and Free Radical damage!!

What is the best sunscreen?

In a nutshell, the best sun care protection formula you can apply to your skin is one that not just protects against UV rays but in addition protects against pollution, dehydration and free radical damage and ultimately can manage and treat specific skin concerns, such as oiliness, sensitivity or skin ageing.

Dermalogica have a variety of SPFs in both physical and chemical varying formulations and these are available for purchase within Beauty Vibes store.  To find out which Dermalogica SPFs are best suited for your skin type click the link here

3 Steps to Healthy Clean Skin!

Great skin starts with a great daily cleansing routine in just 3 simple but 3 very crucial steps..

Skip a step in the cleansing routine on a daily basis and over time you start to recognise that your mission for great skin health is being compromised and here’s why..

Step 1 – Pre Cleanse

Pre Cleanse £38.50

Purpose: To totally remove from skin the daily build-up of dirt, pollution and makeup and ultimately prepare skin for Step 2 – The Second Cleanse.

After the Pre Cleanse step – the Second Cleanse can effectively work at cleansing the skin cell follicles themselves without obstruction which without the Step 1 – Pre Cleanse process the second cleanser would be comprised in its ability to do this as effectively.

How to use:

Apply a small pump amount into palms of clean, dry hands. Apply to face, neck and decollete.  Thoroughly cleanse skin working product across the chest, up the neck and all over the face concentrating on groves of face eg. around nostrils and down the nose, work into the eyebrows, over the eyes and roots of lashes and take the product up to the hairline.

Wet palms to emulsify the product and work overall areas again before removing thoroughly using dampened cotton discs.  Now the skin is ready for Step 2 – Second Cleanse.

Step 2 – Second Cleanse

Special Cleansing Gel – £49.50

Purpose: targeted treatment cleansing to prevent or manage or treat specific skin concerns such as blackheads, congestion and blemishes, oily, dry or sensitised skin areas etc.

Majority will stop their cleanse routine after Step 1 however to properly manage skin cell impurities and aid skin cell purification and speed up cell turnover the Second Cleanse is a vital and necessary initial step to improve skin health.

The second cleanser should therefore be appropriately selected to serve a skin concern and should be worked into clean skin for at least 2 minutes before thoroughly rinsing off or removing with dampened cotton discs.

*Dermalogica range of cleansers with their varied formulations are targeted to treat specific skin concerns such as dry skin, reactive, sensitised skin, oily, combination skin, breakout skin and ageing skin showing signs of pigmentation.  Some have very active ingredients so it is imperative to use the appropriate cleanser that will benefit a particular skin concern. *For more information about Dermalogica targeted skin solutions cleansers click on the link here

 Step 3 – Exfoliate

Daily Microfoliant – £49.50

To keep skin looking young and fresh it needs to be exfoliated regularly.  This prevents a dulling effect on the skin which effectively is dead skin cells sitting on the surface of the skin.  Whilst not all exfoliators are suitable for daily use Dermalogicas’ Daily and Super Microfoliants are however ideal for daily use as they effectively micro exfoliate skin revealing smoother, brighter, fresher younger-looking skin

*Tip

If short on time – add some daily microfoliant to the second cleanser and work into skin for 1-2 minutes before rinsing off

Note

  • Always clean your face using warm tepid water and Never hot water as this strips the skin of essential moisture
  • Always follow the cleansing routine with Toner. *Toner should be considered as another skin conditioning treatment to be applied before serums and moisturisers
  • Always finish the cleansing routine with moisturiser and if it doesn’t contain an SPF consider to apply a light layer of SPF over moisturiser to protect skin from harmful UV rays.

* Dermalogicas’ SPFs are broad spectrum that protect skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays and they have SPF formulations to protect all skin types including re-active, sensitive skin types, oily, breakout skin etc. For more information about Dermalogica various SPFs click on the link here

Dermalogicas – Pro Power Chemical Peel

Dermalogica – Pro Power Peel

“The peel experience, redfined” – put simply this means that the all new advanced peel formulas featuring Salicylic, Lactic and Glycolic Acids can now be customised to target and treat individual skin concerns such as fine lines, pigmentation acne, or advanced signs of ageing.

The Pro Power highly active acid Peel complex works fast to speed up the skin cell renewal process that leads to brighter, smoother more radiant looking skin.

Before considering a pro power peel it is best to first consider the condition of your skin and how well it is currently acclimatised to receive an advanced exfoliating treatment, as this can greatly affect results achieved!

Perhaps a greater understanding of the peel process is necessary and if this is something you are considering the below information is a must read..

What is a chemical peel?

A chemical peel is an advanced skin cell exfoliation process formulated to break up inter cellular glue bonds that bond old dead skin cells together causing a speedy skin cell exfoliating process whilst accelerating the skin cell renewal process to reveal fresher, plumped, more hydrated radiant, youthful looking skin.

Some peels are classed as medical grade peels as they penetrate beyond the basal layer of the skin to reach the upper layers of the dermis or in some cases even the reticular dermis.  These peels treat severe cases of photoaging, deep wrinkles and scars and can only be performed by medical practitioners.

Dermalogicas Pro Power Peel is classed as a superficial peel as it works on the outer layer of the skin (epidermis – stratum corneum) and penetrates down to the basal layer of the skin (stratum germinativum) to treat skin concerns for acne, pigmentation and aging.

Why is a superficial chemical peel beneficial?

As we age the skin cell turnover process slows down dramatically from every 20 days in our 20’s to every 30-40 days by middle age.  The peel process is designed to speed up cell renewal and cell turnover to improve skin texture and appearance to reveal brighter, clearer, younger looking skin.  They are in essence an effective way to treat skin concerns such as pigmentation, advanced signs of ageing, acne and breakouts.

Who is it for?

Everyone can benefit from a pro power skin peel and the healthier the skin the less prone it is to experience an adverse reaction to a peel.  However thinner, sensitised, dehydrated skin types may be more sensitive to a peel as the peel can penetrate faster which can intensify tingling, stinging sensations.  It is therefore recommended that the skin has become acclimatised to a less concentrated formula from both a physical and chemical exfoliating process prior a pro power chemical peel treatment.

Skin Acclimatation

Prior to a Dermalogica Pro Power Chemical Peel treatment, a 24 hour patch test and skin analysis is required and to ensure suitability for treatment a consultation check list is also completed to rule out any possible contra indications to having a peel treatment.

From skin analysis, a preliminary facial treatment (eg. ProSkin30 or ProSkin60)  may be advised to better “prime” the skin, helping to prepare it for the high exfoliating activity of a chemical peel particularly if skin is new to peels or indeed even a professional facial treatment itself.   Either a 30 min or 60 min deep cleanse facial to remove excess sebum and blackheads for oily skin types or an exfoliating treatment to help slough away loose surface dead skin cells followed by a moisturising replenish deep treatment for drier, dehydrated or mature skin types would be recommended.

*In a nutshell the better the condition of the skin and it’s hydration levels the better it will receive the efficacy of the chemical peel and deliver for you faster desired results i.e  clearer, radiant skin

What is meant by an Adverse Reaction?

If the skin has not been suitably acclimatised an adverse reaction can occur either during or after the peel treatment.

During treatment severe tingling may be experienced which is too uncomfortable for the peel process to continue.  In this case the peel will be terminated and the skin will be neutralised returning it back to its normal PH balance.

After the peel process excess peeling maybe experienced.  This may happen if there is a lot of surface dead skin cells present prior to the peel or if the skin has diminished hydration levels .

*The best way to prevent an adverse reaction is to better prime the skin condition and improve its hydration level, both pre and post treatment.

PreCare advise is given pre treatment following skin analysis and a patch test. Professional treatment facial maybe advised as well as a professional at home skin care routine to help prepare skin acclimatise for the peel by exfoliating the skin and boosting skin hydration levels.

Post Care advise is given post peel treatment and a complimentary take home – Pro Power Peel Post Procedure Kit,  is prescribed to ensure correct skin maintenance to manage moisturise levels post treatment.

How does a peel work??

The peel formula is highly active and concentrated to take the PH of the skin from its normal mildly acidic 4.5-5.5 PH Balance down to 1.0-2.5.  At this more acidic level the exfoliating agents (Alpha and Beta Hydroxy Acids +) in the peel cause a superficial shock to the cells causing old skin cells to be easily shed (Desquamation) whilst simultaneously stimulating skin cell renewal.

The peel is also designed to be customised as there are different peel formulas designed to treat different skin concerns such as acne, pigmentation or ageing. For skin experiencing some or all 3 skin concerns they can be customised to target treat or wholly treat areas according to skin concerns.  This makes the peel very bespoke to individual skin concerns.

The peel is fast acting and depending on the skin tolerance 1-3 layers can be applied before commencing the de celerating skin neutralising process.

How long does the peel treatment take?

The peel treatment itself takes only 30 minutes however you can upgrade to a 60 minute peel treatment which will include a relaxing moisturising deep treatment to deeply nourish and replenish moisture levels in the skin.

What should my skin experience post peel?

Depending on the skins acclimatised condition pre treatment it may or may not experience the below side effects;

Day 1 – stinging, irritation, redness, swelling, dryness, tightness, peeling and scabbing

Day 2 – skin may peel or look darker

Day 3 – peeling may begin around the nose and mouth, followed by cheeks, forehead, jawline and neck

*The Pro Power Peel Post Procedure Kit prescribed should be used for 2-3 days post treatment and provided to help manage any of the above mentioned post treatment conditions by increasing hydration levels until the skin no longer experiences extreme dryness or sensitivity

How often can I have a Pro Power Peel?

For normal maintenance every 4 weeks apart

For skin concerns every 2-4 weeks apart
